APFED II

APFED second phase (FY 2005-2010)

In order to facilitate the implementation of policies, measures and actions recommended in the APFED I Final Report of 2004, the programmes were agreed upon at the APFED II First Plenary Meeting held in Bogor, Indonesia in November 2005. APFED II activities were centred around three programme pillars namely (1) Policy Dialogues, (2) Knowledge Initiative (APFED Award and APFED Good Practice Database) and (3) Showcase Programme with the supporting institutional mechanism called NetRes, a regional network of policy research institutes for environmental management and sustainable development . A wide range of activities have been undertaken over the period of 2005 – 2010, and findings, lessons and recommendations were drawn and synthesized in APFED II Final Report.

In September 2010, APFED II Final Report was successfully launched at the side event during the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED 6) in Astana, Kazakhstan. The launching of the APFED II Final Report marked the accomplishment of APFEDII with the support of Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

The APFED Booklet on Good Practices and Innovative Activities (2005-2009) for Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia Pacific made available April 2011 demonstrates the APFED II achievements as it features 75 cases of good practices and innovative activities for sustainable development that were studied or supported under the APFED Award or Showcase Programme.

Governing Body

The Plenary Meeting serves as the governing body for APFED activities. The Plenary Meeting takes place once every year to review the progress made in implementing APFED activities and to discuss future work programmes. The APFED members, NetRes representatives and heads of designated international organisations attend the Plenary Meeting.

Programme Pillars

The APFED II activities consist of three programme pillars, namely (i) Policy Dialogues, (ii) Knowledge Initiatives, and (iii) Showcase Programme.

Supporting Mechanism

An Asia-Pacific regional network of policy research institutes for environmental management and sustainable development called “NetRes” was established at the 2005 APFED II Plenary Meeting in accordance with the 2004 APFED Final Report. NetRes serves as a supporting institutional mechanism for APFED II activities.

The Ona Keto Community Reforestation Project, Papua New Guinea which was selected as 2007 APFED Showcase programme, Setting up Rice Husk Gasification Model Project in Viet Nam for 2008 programme and Sustainable Development of Settlements in Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan for 2007 APFED Showcase Programme was selected as the national winner of ENERGY GLOBE Award 2010 were selected as the national winner of ENERGY GLOBE Award 2010. The awarding ceremony will be held in Kigali, Rwanda on June 3, 2010, as a part of the celebration event of the World Environment Day 2010 organised by UNEP and the Rwandan government.

2009 the Goldman Environmental Prize
The Project manager of the Promotion of Access to Environmental Information in Bangladesh for 2006 APFED Showcase Programme was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize 2009
