The Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Awards for 2008 were announced as shown below. The gold and silver prize winners and the locally based incentive prize winner attended the 2008 Ryutaro Hashimoto Award giving ceremony that was held as a part of the APFED II Fourth Plenary Meeting held in Davao, Philippines from 25 - 26 July 2008.
Gold Prize
Mitigation of the Effects of CO2 and Other Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) by Controlling Slash & Burn Farming, Nepal
Implemented by MDI-Nepal

Since the slash & burn by burning biomass has caused acceleration of land degradation and CO2 emission, this project aims to mitigate land degradation from slash and burn farming, and promote the reduction of CO2emission by following measures; 1) agroforestry at the sloping land, 2) promotion of energy saving technologies e.g. solar home system, biogas, improved cooking stoves, 3)vermicomposting/organic farming, and 4)development of institutions and promotion of livelihood promotion by women.

Utilization of Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism to Enable Investment by the Private Sector with Public Private Partnership Business Model to Convert Open Dumps to Engineered Landfills in Indonesia to Improve Waste Management, Improve Energy Security with Renewable Energy for Community Development and Mitigate against Climate Change, Indonesia
Implemented by PT Gikoko Kogyo Indonesia

The project was conducted in collaboration with local communities to collect methane gas from the waste landfill and to utilize it. This project was well-known among related local governments. The project was registered by UNFCCC as CDM, and the agreement of emission trading was made by private companies and the World Bank.

Integrated Pesticide Management (IPM) technology is a strategy for promoting integrated pest control by reducing the pesticide use. The project was implemented in 2000-2003, funded by the Department for International Development (DFID),UK. The strategy was promoting pest control through the improvement of sanitation in the fields, installation of the traps with sex hormones, and natural enemy insects.

This project is aim to create sustainable urban development and urban comfort community through utilization of environmental friendly construction materials, supply carbon free air conditioning, installation of high energy efficiency on lighting systems.
Capacity Building for Sustainable Construction in Rural Northeast China, China
Implemented by Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) China, CHINA

Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has introduced, demonstrated, and transformed energy efficient straw bale housing technology since 1998. The ADRA has constructed more than 600 houses and three schools by using straw bale. The construction cost is much lower than if it had been constructed using bricks. The agency also conducted the training in straw bale construction bale for more than 200 people from the local government offices, builders and homeowners. The agency subsides 50 % for the purchase of straw baling equipment to the company in return for building 50 homes during 2 year project periods.

This project was undertaken as one of policies to strengthen activities against pollution and global warming under new policy conducting by Mayor,Maximo M. Estela. M.D. The project was implemented for the improvement of waste management under the Republic Act 9003, it was known by "Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001". This project resulted in creating a better landscape in Davao del Norte, and was appreciated by citizens in the city.
All the applications that satisfy the eligibility requirements and that qualify by means of a peer-review will be registered in the APFED Database. The awards aim not only to honour the winners, but also to present and share the lessons learnt and knowledge gained for sustainable development in the region through the continued updating of the database, which is open to the public.
