The awards programme acknowledges
activities or practices that successfully promote sustainable
development in Asia and the Pacific. Acknowledgement will be
made by giving awards to the activities or practices that are
outstanding, unique and innovative regarding the following aspects:
a)
methodologies, approaches and designs;
b)
implementation modalities (ability to withstand
conventional challenges);
c)
application of innovative technologies;
d)
stakeholder mobilisation/participation and
partnership development;
environmental and socio-economic impacts in
the context of promoting sustainable development/improving
sustainability;
g)
durability and self-reliance (perspectives
for long-term continuation).
Application
of benchmarks and indicators
In order to evaluate the impact of the activities or practices, and to draw a fair comparison between applications, it is advised that the applicants provide as much data as possible on the achievements and impacts of the activities or practices in accordance with the benchmarks and indicators that are normally used for monitoring and evaluating projects aimed at sustainable development.
Selection
Process
1.
Call for Applications for the 2008 Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Awards
The APFED Secretariat will announce/post the "Call for Applications" on the websites of APFED and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), which serves as the APFED Secretariat, as well as on the websites of the Asia Pacific Network (APN), the Ministry of Environment of Japan (MOEJ) and other international organisations. In addition to online announcements, the above-mentioned institutions may forward the announcement to interested parties using other information/communication tools.
The APFED Secretariat examines
the application contents and checks if it has satisfied all eligibility
conditions. Applications with inadequate information may be rejected
during the selection process.
3.
In-depth Evaluation
After the preliminary screening,
applications will be examined in depth based on the criteria
for the awards programme, and prospective projects will be short-listed.
The APFED Secretariat will verify information of the short-listed
applications directly, through APFED members or the Asia-Pacific
Regional Network of Policy Research Institutes for Sustainable
Development (NetRes).
4.
Final Selection
The Awards Committee members
will review the short-listed and verified applications, and propose
possible winners for final selection by the APFED Chairperson.
5.
Announcement of Winners
The award winners will be
announced in due course (around the second week of July
2008).
The winners of gold and silver prizes will be invited to the award ceremony to be held in late July - early August 2008.
