UNFCCC COP14 & CMP4 Side Event
Role of Civil Society in Tackling Climate Change
The UNFCCC COP14 side event entitled "Role of Civil Society in Tackling Climate Change" was co-organised with the Asia - Europe Environmental Forum on Friday 5 December 2008. The speakers were with diverse background including research institutes, media, business, university, NGOs and international organisations. The panellists and audience had rich discussions, and broadly shared views that civil society has a vital role to play in forging public understanding and support towards establishing a low carbon and sustainable society. It was underpinned that civil society organisations must act in partnership and demonstrate pragmatic actions. While visions and mission statements need to be articulated and more widely shared among stakeholders, they must be transformed into concrete actions that will generate tangible results in terms of emission reductions, livelihood improvement, policy evolution and institutional development. Through enhanced network activities and partnership, civil society can demonstrate synergistic impacts of our joint endeavours in tackling tackle climate change.
