Access to information (November 2005 Jakarta, Indonesia)
Asia-Europe Environment Forum "1/3 of Our Planet" side event
Workshop on Access to and Dissemination of Environmental Information in Asia
On 23-25 November 2005, the Asia-Europe Environment Forum "1/3 of Our Planet: What Can Asia and Europe Do for Sustainable Development?" was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
APFED held a side event entitled the 'Workshop on Access and Dissemination of Environmental Information in Asia' and IGES contributed as the secretariat.
Asian countries are lagging behind in many aspects of access to environmental information. They face many challenges in establishing freedom of information laws, although access to environmental information is vital for promoting policies and measures conducive to sustainable development. In this workshop, representatives of the APFED, the European experts of the Aarhus Convention, officials of governments and other relevant organisations reviewed the situation of environmental information access in the region and discussed related challenges and possible solutions. The discussions led to key suggestions to promote access to information for sustainable development and emphasised the necessity of regional collaborations, national initiatives and partnership among stakeholders.
At this workshop, IGES presented its Policy Brief #2 entitled, 'Information Access as a Vehicle for Sustainable Development in Asia - Establishing regional agreement in Asia'.
